This mountainous region is teeming with a variety of wildlife species including over 400 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species including L’Hoest’s monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, olive baboons and several bird species recorded to be over 332 species including the endangered Red-Collared Babbler and other 29 other Albertine Rift Endemic species and 120 butterfly species.

Detailed Itinerary of 4 Days Nyungwe Forest National Park and Lake Kivu Safari

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

On arrival at Kigali International Airport or after breakfast at your hotel, you will be warmly welcomed by our driver – guide, he will give you a short briefing about the safari and what to expect, then embark on a journey south to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

You will have your first stopover at Kigali Genocide Memorial grounds for an insight on 1994 Rwanda genocide and the Kimironko Market.

You will have another stopover in Butare for lunch and visit to Butare Museum and the Nyanza King’s Palace. Continue with your journey to Nyungwe arriving in the evening, check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

Wake early for lunch and head to the park headquarters for briefing about chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest, what to expect as well as the right way to behave. Head to the starting point and enter into forest led by an armed ranger looking for chimpanzees, the trek takes approximately 2 to 4 hours depending on the movement of the chimpanzees and where they spent their previous night.

During the trek you will also see other primates including olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys and other primate species. On locating these playful primates you will spend one hour in their presence watching them play, feed and groom each other.

Trek back to the park headquarters, meet your guide and return to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you will return to the park for a Canopy Walk starting from the Uwinka Visitor Centre. On this experience you get to enjoy views of the forest and other primate species such as olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys and several bird species. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Kivu and Evening Boat Cruise

Wake up early for a leisurely breakfast, check out and embark on a journey to Kibuye on a journey of 1 to 2 hours. On arrival you will check in at your lodge for short rest and lunch. Later you will head out to Lake Kivu for a boat trip, enjoy the cool breeze of the lake or relax at the shores reading a book or soaking your feet in the sand.

Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
